had the honor of inducting Steve "Porchlight" Pryor into the Tulsa
World Spot Music Awards Hall of Fame this past Fridat night at Cain's Ballroom.
This honor was awarded to Pryor after being nominated and winning the Blues
Award for five times. He joins a select group of Tulsa musicians with this
honor.

few years to collect five awards. The Spot Awards are no different. I would
just like to thank all the voters out there who took time out of their busy

Between sets at Jersey’s Sports Pub I was asked to do an interview for the Blues Society of Tulsa ---Blues News--- newsletter. Steve had just won the Best Blues Act at the Tulsa World Spot Awards. I jumped at the opportunity…but I didn’t have a pen and paper or recorder …I just hoped I could remember it all by the time I got home. Steve was looking at some pictures someone took of him at the Spot Awards. We were talking with Steve Pryor, October 17, at Jersey’s Sports Pub, he said, “Make sure you let everyone know that I meant no disrespect by not being there to accept the (Spot) award on time.” His later performance with the Guitar Gods did much more than make up for it. Steve explained that (his longtime girlfriend) Tina’s father, Bud Collins, had passed away that week. He was one of the best musicians of his time and had played all over. “We just got back into town (from the funeral) and we were running late…she couldn’t find anything to wear and I didn’t want to rush her.” Pryor said that Collins “had just gotten a new bull. It was only 6 months old and already about half a ton. It kept getting out of the fences and running down the road, so he was building a new pipe fence. He had a brain aneurism and we lost him 24 hours later.”
Later, his eyes lit up and said proudly “Really, I couldn’t believe I won it (Spot Award) again…I didn’t think I would”. The band has been taking a break through the summer and they’re just now starting to do more shows around town again. This was his fourth win of the five years for Best Blues Act (only once more and he’ll go into the hall of fame with Steve Ripley and Flash Terry)
“I want everyone to know that I’ve cleaned up and I’m planning on making a new album…one that takes more than two hours to record. This will be the one that I’ve wanted to make my whole life. This time I’m getting some ducks lined up in a row…you know if you don’t have them in a straight line you might miss one. I’ve been getting some songs ready and I want to make something that people really want to listen to.” He told us while growing up “I was playing guitar long before he ever heard of the Beatles”, the people he listened to were “Glen Campbell and Buck Owens and those guys. It was because of them, I knew I wanted to play guitar.” Someone mentioned Johnny Lang, who recently played at the Brady Theater, and all of the huge tour buses lined up outside. Steve said respectfully, “In a few years he’ll wish he was out here in the trenches feeling all the love that people give”. He added “Every time I set foot in one of those, after about 45 minutes I want to get out. All I can think about is being gone”. “Someone once asked me why I stay around here and play and have this big ‘Tulsa’ tattoo on my left shoulder”. He proudly said “I love it here! I get to play what I want, get to spend time with Tina, I get to go home when I want, I get to play when I want and get to make a little money.”
We all went back inside and they played Runaway Lullaby, Tore Down, The Wind Cries Mary, and this beautiful soothing jazz tune that got huge applause…then I had to go home and start typing.

Unfortunate news: 4/20 I just found out that Steve has been in what appears to have been a very serious auto accident, he is alive but apparently suffered severe injurys focused about the lower half of his body. He is in an Arkansas hospital and I will let you know more as I find out. Update: I have now heard from 3 different sources that Steve ran off of hwy 62 sometime Friday 4/16 or Saturday 4/17 and hit a tree in his van, he had to be life flighted to a Fayetteville hospital, intail reports are both feet crushed.. one crushed vertebra.. 3 cracked ribs.. most of his equipment destroyed.. and I would assume the van is totaled. 4/21 I was told this morning that he did break his back and is under going surgery for that currently, and that his feet are in worse condition than his back, plus severe kidney damage. Steve doesn't have much family left locally, so info is slow to come around at this point. The hospital is not giving any information directly at this time. 4/27 Crazy Horse is on the way over to see Steve and bring back an update, still looking for pledges on the guitar. 4/29 Steve did have surgery on his other foot. 4/30 Steve left the Arkansas hospital early this week, I haven't talked to him since he left. Some one is keeping me informed, and I expect him to turn up in a Tulsa hospital. 5/03 I saw Steve last night for the first time since the accident, he looks good considering. He has lost just a little weight and rides his wheel chair with leggs propped up sticking straight out and bandaged. He has taken two area visits to hospitals, but not been addmitted. I have no doubt that he will be at the Blues Fest. And he says he will try to play lap steel at Bostons this week, although I'm not sure what day. I will try to find that out.5/11 He is about to get his pins taken out.
